Junior School Private Education at Ormiston College – Learning for Life

Preparatory School is our first entry point to the College, with Junior School extending from Year 1 to Year 7. Both Prep and Junior School provides students with a firm academic foundation through a supportive private education environment and gives them the grounding to become confident, and independent young adults.

Innovative Prep Schools Program

Our Preparatory (Prep) School has a wonderful program, filled with the buzz and activity of all our busy little bodies exploring their environment, learning new skills and generally having fun.

We believe that children learn best in a play-based environment. The Prep School Curriculum Guidelines states that play is a natural activity through which children make meaning of the world around them. Play facilitates all development and is an invaluable means for initiating, promoting and sustaining learning.

Our prep children participate in a fun hands-on way with painting, drawing, construction, music, literacy, numeracy, role playing, dance and movement.

Children are encouraged to collaborate and negotiate, learn, solve problems and construct knowledge together. We believe in providing a setting that enriches these experiences, that is visually pleasing and intellectually stimulating both indoors and out. The light, airy rooms of our Prep school blend with the outdoor play area in the natural setting for which Ormiston College is renowned.

Knowledge, Skills and Confidence

Our Junior School captures our village community feel. The Junior School forms an enclosing circle around an extensive courtyard where the pre-existing eucalyptus trees (complete with resident koalas) have been left for shade.

All classrooms are spacious, air conditioned and well equipped to provide a productive, stimulating environment where children can learn and grow according to their individual abilities, learning styles and interests.

Our Junior School curriculum is delivered by individual class teachers for core skills and specialist teachers in art, technology, music, drama, science, library research, and physical education. It also includes LOTE in Years 6 and 7, as well as our fantastic co-curricular program.

Exceptional private school facilities

Our Junior School students benefit from world-class private school facilities – the Lingo Lin Performing Arts Theatre, Somerset Sports Centre  and Marsson Aquatic Centre.

The Junior School also enjoys its own playground, oval and outdoor multi-purpose courts, art centre and music centre.

Science Centre – Junior School students benefit from the science centre, which incorporates five Biology and Chemistry Science Laboratories and a dry Physics Science Laboratory. In preparation for the next phase of their education, Years 6 and 7 attend Senior Science Laboratory lessons with a Senior Science teacher.

All Junior School Classrooms are equipped with interactive whiteboards that allow teachers to deliver lessons in a range of different styles and a bank of computers in each room allows students regular access to digital learning resources stored on the school network and the internet.

Fully Equipped Computer Laboratories – Preparing our students for a future in a technology driven world needs the most up-to-date facilities, equipment and training. Our College provides nine computer laboratories - each containing at least 28 computers, two mini-lab classrooms of 15 computers each, an Electronic Learning Centre containing 30 networked computers and Music Keyboard Laboratory accommodating 30 students.

Our Director of e-Learning is responsible for strategic planning for ICTs at Ormiston College. The position also involves providing ongoing support and training for teachers, advancing the innovative ways technology is used to enhance learning outcomes and overseeing  the development of each student's ability to create, evaluate, analyse and apply higher order learning skills.

Resource Centre – Provides a central learning focus to the campus and comprises four uniquely designated wings: the Junior Learning Centre housing the Junior Fiction section; an electronic learning centre supplies 30 computers used for class and individual research; a comprehensive reference collection; and the library administration.

The central hub of the Library Resource Centre comprises two class areas and fiction and non-fiction material.

Of vital importance in our schools environment, our caring and supportive Pastoral Care team underpins and supports the total school ethos, our teaching staff, individual children and families.

As parents, we know our choice of school is one of the most important decisions we make on our children’s behalf. It is a decision that will influence not only their future but also their attitude towards learning, success and happiness.
