This week on Wednesday 11 November the College gathered together for our annual Speech Night. We acknowledged our graduating class; celebrated the continued growth of the College, the spirit and accord within its community and a year that will be remembered as setting new academic, sporting and cultural benchmarks. For those of you unable to join us, I take this opportunity to share my welcome address.

Welcome Address, Mr Brett Webster

Good evening Special Guests, ladies and gentlemen.

Welcome to Speech Night 2015. It’s our night of nights, where we celebrate some of the year’s outstanding achievements, showcase the talents of our students and recognise the collective efforts of our entire community.

But before we look at what 2015 has meant to our College, it strikes me that it was also an important commemorative year in the wider context.

While these two events may not seem related, they still impact us; they still influence our world today; and in many ways can provide a roadmap for us, and our College, even 100 years on.

These days it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the massive changes taking place in our society.

However I like to think that we at Ormiston College have learned from the mateship, tenacity, and optimism in the face of challenge, shown by the ANZACS; as well as the visionary brilliance, intellectual courage and futures focus of role models as remarkable as Einstein.

What I hope we have learned is that in every challenge there is an opportunity, and that although we will look to the future, we should never forget the lessons from the past…

With such influences, our present (our 27th) year as a College has been another worth celebrating:

There were some great highlights. Whilst these 2015 highlights are all wonderful landmarks on our journey into the future, it is our people - who make us - the College that we are.

I thank each of you for joining us here tonight, and for all you do in support of OC and its students on every other day.

If people do make a College what it is, then our community has abundance of compelling reasons to be optimistic about our future.

Like Einstein, we will continue to learn new things and push the limits of our knowledge. Like the ANZACS, we will never forget - that this is a journey - and that we are all in it together.

We thank each of you for being a part of Ormiston College and its journey, and - fundamentally - that is what we celebrate tonight.
