Artist Therese Flynn-Clarke inspires Year 7 students

On Wednesday September 7, Art staff and the Year 7 cohort welcomed artist and educator Therese Flynn-Clarke to lead a workshop creating mixed media sculptures. Therese is a prolific and committed artist involved in her own art practise, a tutor and teacher, and a respected member and participant of many community arts groups, including Flying Arts Alliance servicing regional areas in Queensland. Therese works using a number of mediums including sculptural fibre art, eco-dyeing, ceramics and mixed media, which all reflect her deep connection to the natural world.

Therese observes indigenous cultural perspectives showing the students that her inspiration comes from the Indigenous and Torres Strait people, who have taken their traditional skills for weaving and basketry and used them to create contemporary works of art.

The students listened intently as Therese spoke about the remote locations she visits, the inspiration she finds in nature and how the people she meets show her how to use materials in an interesting and inventive way; she is constantly inspired and learning something new every day.

The Year 7s enjoyed the hands-on approach, working with new materials and creating something without the pressure of assessment. The creatures they have created will be on display at the 2016 Art Show on the 4 November, but the photo gallery below has a little ‘sneak peek’ of our wonderful workshop session…
