Students from Ormiston College joined children across the country at noon on Wednesday 22 May, to participate in National Simultaneous Storytime. This year’s picture book was Bowerbird Blues, written and illustrated by the award-winning Australian illustrator, writer and designer, Aura Parker. The story follows a curious bowerbird’s quest for blue objects and is a beautiful tale of longing and connection.

The Prep and Year 6 students also took part in a special library lesson as part of the event. Guest readers shared the beautiful story, and then the oldest and youngest Junior School readers worked together on Bowerbird Blues crafts. These activities included constructing a bowerbird or nest from building blocks and completing an 'I Spy' worksheet.

Across Australia, an impressive 2,359,147 participants at 21,969 locations took part in this annual literary event, held by the Australian Library and Information Association, to promote the value of reading and literacy. Reading events like this are a wonderful way to generate excitement around books and to encourage a lifelong passion for reading in our young learners.
