Ormiston College has announced its strongest results to date in the Australian Geography Competition, a contest for Australian secondary school students, assessing their geographical knowledge and skills. The College’s performance builds on a long-standing tradition of success, consistently placing in the top three schools in Queensland for the past four years.

This year, Ormiston College emerged as the top-performing school in Queensland, securing first place overall. In the first for the College, six students placed in the top one percent of their cohort statewide, and three students achieved the highest score in their year level across Queensland. These three students were recognised at the Geography Teachers Association of Queensland Conference, where the College also received the Top School in Queensland award.

“This year’s results are a milestone for our College, and I could not be prouder of what our students and staff have accomplished together,” remarked Ian Burgess, Head of Department for Humanities.

Among the standout achievements, a Year 11 student has been selected as one of 16 students to attend Geography’s Big Week Out, a five-day event which focuses on fieldwork, spatial technologies and analytical skills. The event also serves as the selection process for the four-member Australian team that will compete in the 2026 International Geography Olympiad in Istanbul, Turkey.

A total of 501 students from the College participated in the competition, making it one of the largest contributing schools in Queensland. One in three students received a certificate, with 163 awards across High Distinction, Distinction, and Credit levels. These results reflect the talent and commitment of the students across all year levels.

The College also acknowledges the important role played by its Humanities teaching staff whose commitment, passion and support of students has been a key factor in building student capability.
