Four geography students from Ormiston College are taking part in the 2025 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Challenge. This year-long challenge encourages students to identify local environmental issues related to biospheric SDGs and develop innovative, STEM-based solutions using GIS technology.
On Monday 28 July, the students attended an inspiring workshop at Brisbane Square Library as part of the challenge. The event led by Esri Australia in collaboration with Griffith University and Brisbane City Council brought schools together from across the region for a day of inspiration and learning.
Griffith University opened the workshop with a discussion on sustainability and SDG initiatives. This was followed by Brisbane City Council who outlined their role in urban sustainability. The day concluded with a hands-on GIS workshop led by Jennah Williams, Science and Education Manager at Esri Australia, who assisted the students to create impactful content for their SDG project.
The Ormiston College team has chosen to focus their challenge on Coochiemudlo Island, investigating real-world solutions to help achieve the SDGs. Their project has been officially registered with the United Nations.
Working collaboratively, the students will meet regularly to research, map and communicate their findings using GIS storytelling tools. Their final case study and conclusions will be submitted in October as part of the SDGs Challenge requirements.
