On Tuesday 21 July, our Year 10 Geography students arrived at Kingscliff Beach with showers overhead and an East Coast Low still influencing the coastline after several days of wild weather. By the time they climbed into the dunes, the rain had cleared, the sun was shining, and a gorgeous warm sun signalled the start of a day of authentic scientific investigation.
This wasn't simply a beach excursion.
Our students stepped into the role of geographers, geospatial analysts and environmental scientists tackling one of Australia's most pressing challenges: How do we understand, manage and protect our changing coastlines?
Using industry-standard Geographic Information System (GIS) technology, including ArcGIS Survey123, alongside professional fieldwork techniques, students collected high-quality spatial data, surveyed dune morphology, analysed vegetation communities and measured coastal processes. Back in the classroom, these datasets will be visualised, mapped and interrogated using ArcGIS, allowing students to uncover patterns and develop evidence-based recommendations for future coastal management.
This experience highlights why Geography is far more than learning about places. It is the umbrella STEM subject — bringing together environmental science, technology, engineering thinking, mathematics, spatial analysis and data science to solve real-world problems. It develops the analytical, technological and decision-making skills that underpin careers in environmental management, urban and regional planning, landscape architecture, engineering, emergency management, sustainability, defence, mining, agriculture, logistics, business analytics, public health and housing, government and the rapidly expanding geospatial industry.
Our Geography students do more than learn about the world. They collect the data. They analyse the evidence. They ask the difficult questions. And they develop the skills to help shape the future.
Tomorrow's biggest challenges will be solved by people who can understand places, interpret complex data and make informed decisions. Geography plays a vital role in developing these capabilities, providing the context that gives STEM learning purpose and helping students connect knowledge with real-world outcomes.
