Our Year 9 Business students have achieved outstanding results at the 2026 QUT Accounting Challenge.

Hosted by the Queensland University of Technology, the competition introduces Years 9 and 10 students to real-world business and financial decision-making. Working in small groups, students take on the role of an accountant responding to a client-based scenario. This process involves analysing information, developing financial insights, and presenting clear recommendations.

Teams initially submit a written proposal and presentation to QUT’s School of Accountancy. From a large field of entries, only 12 teams progressed to the finals, held in June at QUT’s Gardens Point campus in Brisbane. Two Ormiston College teams were selected as finalists in the statewide event; a significant accomplishment for the students.

At the finals, students presented their work to a panel of judges comprising university staff, industry partners, and representatives from CPA Australia and Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand.

A special congratulations goes to the Ormiston College ‘Accounting Potatoes’ team, who finished as runners up. Both Ormiston College teams are to be commended for their effort, teamwork and thoughtful approach they brought to the competition.

The experience provided a valuable opportunity for students to apply their classroom learning in a practical setting, while building skills in teamwork, communication and critical thinking. It also offered insight into potential pathways in accounting and business.
