On Wednesday 11 February, two Senior Geography and Science students had the opportunity to celebrate International Day of Women and Girls in Science at a breakfast presentation, hosted by Ranger Stacey. Accompanied by Geography teacher, Mrs Roz Minnikin, they enjoyed a delightful breakfast surrounded by the natural beauty of the Redlands IndigiScapes Centre. Throughout the morning, they listened to an inspiring panel discussion featuring speakers who shared their personal journeys and valuable insights into careers in science and environmental research.

The guest speakers included:

  • Professor Kerrie Wilson: Queensland Chief Scientist.
  • Dr Janet M Lanyon, University of Queensland Senior Lecturer, Researcher and Zoologist specialising in marine mammal biology.
  • Melina Gillespie, Principal Project Officer with the Queensland Chief Scientist Coordination and Engagement.

The International Day of Women and Girls in Science recognises the significant achievements and contributions of women and girls in STEM. It highlights the importance of gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls worldwide, celebrating their leadership and impact in Science and Technology.

The event celebrated the achievements of women in STEM and encouraged the next generation of scientists to pursue their passions and make a positive impact on our world. We are proud to see our students connecting with leading scientists and gaining inspiration to help shape the future of Environmental Science.
