On Thursday 7 August, Ormiston College proudly hosted the inaugural RoboCup Junior Redlands Regional SumoBot Challenge, welcoming 65 students across 19 teams from schools around the region. This event was one of only three trial Sumo competitions held in Queensland in 2025.

RoboCup Junior Australia is a dynamic platform that empowers young learners to explore robotics, programming, teamwork, and problem-solving in a fun and competitive environment. While Ormiston College has long participated in RoboCup events such as Rescue Line, Rescue Maze, and Soccer, this was the first year that SumoBot has been included in RoboCup Queensland competitions.

Teams competed across three divisions: Primary, Secondary, and Open. Ormiston College Robotics Club students showcased their innovation and skill, ultimately taking out first place in both the Secondary and Open categories.

Following on the success of the Redlands event, a group of Robotics students from Ormiston College travelled interstate for the first time to compete in the RoboCup South Australia State Competition, hosted by St Peter’s College in Adelaide. With the support of a Federal Government Grant, the teams represented Ormiston College with skill and sportsmanship placing first, third and fourth in the Heavyweight SumoBot Challenge.

Congratulations to all our Robotics students, we look forward to seeing what our Robotics Club achieves next.
