The Lingo Lin Performing Arts Theatre at Ormiston College was transformed into the vibrant underwater world of Bikini Bottom as Junior School students took to the stage in The SpongeBob Musical: Youth Edition. Staged across four performances from Thursday 28 May to Saturday 30 May, each show was met with applause from delighted audiences.
The musical follows the adventure of SpongeBob and friends as they work together to save Bikini Bottom from an impending volcanic eruption. With time running out and hope fading fast, an unlikely hero emerges to prove that optimism can make the impossible possible.
Audiences were treated to standout performances filled with energy, catchy songs and well-timed humour, showcasing the talent within the Junior School.
Producer Louise Scott highlighted the impact of the experience for students. “Just like SpongeBob and his friends, our students have worked together, supported one another and discovered that everyone’s strengths matter,” she said. “Whether it’s through their kindness, creativity, confidence or determination, each child has played an important role in bringing this production to life.”
Preparation for the musical began in Term 1, with students committing countless hours to rehearsing songs, choreography, and scenes.
Drama Teacher and Director Jackie McCarthy praised the students’ efforts and growth throughout the process. “The confidence, professionalism and enthusiasm these students bring to the rehearsal room is a credit to the people who train and nurture them,” she said.
Behind the scenes, the production was a true community effort. Staff, parent helpers and friends contributed their time and expertise in areas such as set construction, costumes, sound and lighting, makeup, backstage, student supervision and catering, all playing a vital role in the success of the show.
Head of Performing Arts Jason Taggart commended the collaborative spirit of the OC community. “The production reflects countless hours of thoughtful preparation, creativity and collaboration,” he said. “It is a celebration not only of performance, but of the community that sits behind it.”
The result was a colourful and joyful experience that delighted audiences while providing students with an invaluable opportunity to develop confidence, creativity, and connection.
