Congratulations to Year 12 Geography student Smriti, whose exceptional project ‘Investigating Demographic Challenges at Chambers Flat–Logan Reserve, Queensland’ has been shortlisted as a nominee in the Planning Institute of Australia (PIA) Queensland Awards for Planning Excellence 2025. Smriti is competing in the Secondary Student Project category, which recognises outstanding contributions from young scholars across the state.

Her research demonstrates remarkable depth and technical sophistication. By integrating multi-source demographic data with advanced ArcGIS spatial analysis, Smriti produced seven professional-grade thematic maps that illustrate the dynamics of Queensland’s fastest-growing community. Her findings highlight critical infrastructure gaps, including a 60.83 percent shortfall in education capacity and the absence of public transport access. To address these challenges, Smriti proposed evidence-based policy recommendations aligned with real-world planning frameworks.

Among only seven nominees statewide, Smriti’s work stands out for its analytical rigour, innovation, and relevance to community development.

“Smriti’s nomination reflects not only her technical skill and academic excellence, but also her commitment to being a change-maker and a woman of influence,” said Senior Geography Teacher Roz Minnikin.

This recognition is a testament to Smriti’s dedication and the high standard of learning within our Geography program.
