Before Term 1 began, Ormiston College warmly welcomed its newest Secondary School students to the Year 7 Making Connections Orientation Day. This event, which forms part of the Making Connections program, provides both new and continuing students with the opportunity to build friendships, navigate their new learning environment, and feel supported and ready for the exciting transition into Middle School.
Throughout the day, students engaged in a range of activities tailored to help them feel confident and connected, including:
- Team building activities within Wellbeing classes that encouraged new friendships
- House spirit sessions with Coordinators and House Captains to strengthen identity and connection
- Campus tours led by Year 11 Mentors, allowing students to explore the facilities
- Introduction to ICT and Library services, ensuring students feel capable and prepared for the academic year
- Fun House games on the oval, helping students bond through shared experiences and laughter
A defining strength of the program is the involvement of Senior student leaders. Year 11 Mentors play an active role in guiding Year 7 students, not only on Orientation Day but throughout the year. Mentors meet with their Year 7 groups every week and accompany them on the Year 7 Camp, ensuring students always have a friendly, familiar face to turn to for support or advice.
The Making Connections program is a unique initiative designed to support Year 7 students over the course of their first year in Middle School. By focusing on relationships, wellbeing and confidence building, the program helps students feel reassured as they take this important next step in their schooling journey.
With the support of their Wellbeing Teachers, Year 11 Mentors and new friends, Year 7 students can feel more confident and excited to embrace the year of learning ahead.
