Pizza and Paperback Night

It was another great night for all involved in the College’s second annual Pizza and Paperback Night. The evening is the brainchild of our Librarian Deb Ponting and the fact that 84 children and male adults (fathers, grandfathers etc.) participated is testament to the fact that the night is not only worthwhile but also a lot of fun.

The event was held between 5pm and 7pm in the CLI and open to Prep to Year 6 students and the male members of their families. Participants could bring their own books or borrow from the CLI.  After their reading session, everyone was treated to a pizza dinner.

The purpose of the night is to encourage more fathers, grandfathers and other male figures in our children’s lives to spend time reading together.

A recent study by Harvard University has discovered that fathers participating in reading has a big effect on children’s literacy.  Researchers found that questions posed by men when reading to children were found to have sparked ‘imaginative discussions’. This, of course, is better for a child’s language development because the children are inclined to be challenged more. Research also shows that seeing males read has a significant impact particularly on reluctant boy readers.

Mrs Ponting commented that what was fabulous about the night was listening to fathers tell other fathers what worked for them to get their children interested in reading.

We look forward to seeing even more families get involved in this great night next year.
