Welcome Back - Term 1 2019

Posted on 29 January 2019

We trust that all College families have had a restful and enjoyable Christmas holiday period and we look forward to seeing students return to the campus on Wednesday 30 January to begin the brand-new school year.

It is an exciting time as we welcome new students and their families to the OC community and see our young people proudly step up to the new challenges and opportunities of their next year level.

The year’s beginning is also a time when we miss our most recent graduates and their presence on campus, but we are always pleased to celebrate their efforts and schooling outcomes.

Congratulations Class of 2018

Academic outcomes for 2018, released by the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority, show that Ormiston College students continue to achieve exceptionally well as they graduate from secondary studies and begin their post-school lives.

On Queensland’s Overall Position (OP) scale between 1 and 25:

- A record 16 students have been awarded the State’s highest Overall Position, an OP1

- 37% of students achieved an OP score of 5 or better

- 75.6% achieved an OP score of 10 or better

The Class of 2018 can be extremely proud of these impressive outcomes. Overall, the 2018 outcomes rate among Ormiston College’s strongest ever for a Year 12 graduating class. As a College we are certainly proud of their accomplishments and we look forward to hearing of their future achievements and adventures beyond school.

Centre for Learning and Innovation – Now Open

A point of much discussion and excitement throughout 2018 was the construction of the new Centre for Learning and Innovation (CLI). We are pleased to advise that this brand-new facility is now open for students to use. As of the first day of Term, timetabled lessons, library services and ICT Help Desk services will all be conducted in the building. The CLI will be open before school from 7.30am and closes at 5pm Monday to Thursday, and 4pm on Friday.

Students had some opportunity to explore the facilities during tours conducted last year and will no doubt be looking forward to accessing the learning spaces and associated services housed in the building.

This new campus centrepiece provides large flexible learning areas, small collaboration spaces, a state-of-the-art makerspace, a contemporary recording studio, areas for mixed reality, robotics and STEM activities as well as reading areas and quiet study zones.

A Canteen and Café precinct, which replaces the College Tuckshop will no doubt help ensure that this new building quickly fulfils its intended role as a vibrant social and learning hub. The College community can also look forward to enjoying the building’s surrounding landscape which includes outdoor gathering spaces, an outdoor performance stage and an extensive arrangement of shaded seating alcoves which have been incorporated into established garden settings.

Details regarding the official opening ceremony for this building will be shared with our community later in the Term.

Canteen and Café Services

Perhaps one of the most anticipated facilities to be housed within the location of the CLI is the new College Canteen and Café precinct. The College has appointed caterers Chartwells, who specialise in providing hospitality services to schools and universities, to operate these dining services.

Challenging the concept of ‘institutional’ food, Chartwells brings a High Street food experience to education, providing quality fresh food of the highest nutritional standards and presentation.

The Canteen will be open each day from 7.30am providing breakfast, morning tea and lunch services.

The Café will be open for parents from 7.30am to 9am and 2.30pm to 4pm daily. Students will have limited access to the Café before and after school. The Café will be closed to students during school hours.

The ‘My Student Account’ facility previously operated by the Tuckshop will now be used for purchases at the Canteen. The My Student Account facility allows online orders and is also linked to Student ID Cards which can be presented at the check-out for purchases made directly at the Canteen. Any remaining account credits from 2018 will carry over.

Families who have not previously set up accounts may do so by accessing My Student Account from the Ormiston College website, Parent Zone website or College App using your College Parent Login details.

An EFTPOS facility will operate at the Café.

Protocols and processes for use of the Canteen and Café will be communicated to students on the first day. Menus and further details regarding the Canteen and Café services will be available on Parent Zone and the College App.

Land Swap with Redland City Council Project

Ormiston College has negotiated a land swap arrangement with Redland City Council.

In a win-win arrangement, Council have taken possession of some College land, suitable for increasing the size of the Council conservation area, located to the west of the College Somerset Sports Centre Field.

In exchange, Ormiston College has received a slightly smaller parcel of land to the north. The resulting realigned property boundary provides a more regular shape to the College’s north-west border and will enable students to enjoy an additional playing field.

Earthworks to level and prepare the surface commenced on 7 January and are expected to be completed in six weeks.

Sturgeon Street Entrance Configuration

Late in 2018, the College acquired the property at 122 Sturgeon Street. The existing dwelling on this property has been demolished, clearing the 974m2 block which will be incorporated into our sporting facilities. Landscaping to complement the existing entrance at Sturgeon Street will be completed in the coming weeks.

Important Back to School Information/Forms

Over the next few weeks, the College will provide parents with a number of important communication items to help you and your child make a smooth start to the academic year.

These communication items will supply details on a wide range of matters including forms which must be returned, Uniform Shop and Book Hire hours and procedures, class information, events and so on. Information around these and many other matters can be found on the Parent Zone website, see link below.

We encourage parents to be thorough in checking all relevant information, knowing that a well- organised start to the school year helps children begin the Term feeling confident and prepared for the learning and study ahead.

Traffic Flow and Parking at peak times

Back-to-school usually brings larger than normal volumes of traffic to the campus. We encourage all parents to be safety conscious when in the vicinity of the College. All vehicles accessing the campus via Dundas Street West should proceed to the end (the most western point) where it is possible to safely turn. To minimise congestion in drive-through zones we also request that parents adhere to standing times and do not park in these areas. Parents are also asked to be mindful that the carpark accessed from Entry 3 on Dundas Street West is designated as a staff carpark during school hours. This carpark does not have a designated drop-off area.
