One of the largest school-based mathematics competitions, attracting student entries from countries throughout the world, is the annual Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC). This event, dating back to 1978, is run by the Australian Maths Trust. Their various competitions and programs are designed specifically to assist students, of all ages, to become more proficient problem solvers. Their Chief Executive Officer, Nathan Ford, believes “The problems students solve today will lead them on to a better future tomorrow.” The AMC is a 30-problem competition, compiled by leading academics and educators with an astute knowledge of the national curriculum.

At the 2019 AMC Awards ceremony on 16 August, three Ormiston College students received Maths Prizes. We congratulate Can Luka Dagtekin (Year 7), Riley O’Brien (Year 8) and Khaled Khan (Year 10). In addition to this, Ormiston College was recognised as the Maths Trust Champion School for our commitment to the motivation of student learning through the use of AMC and their various programs and resources.

This excellent result follows on from our previous mathematics success in June, when Ormiston College entered several teams in the 2019 Maths Team Challenge. On that occasion our teams were successful in claiming a First and a Second place in the Senior Division (Years 11/12), a repeat of First and Second in the Intermediate Division (Years 9/10), plus a Third Place (with only two points between First and Third) for the Junior Division (Years 7/8). The result of which gained Champion School status for Ormiston College. A very successful year for our great mathematicians.
