Book Week is always a welcomed opportunity at Ormiston College to promote the fun and enjoyment of reading and to celebrate the exciting world of children’s literature. Each year across Australia, the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) brings children and books together celebrating CBCA Book Week.

The much-anticipated Book Week parade was held on Friday 23 August. This year’s event at Ormiston College promised to be the biggest yet with 96.5FM Family Breakfast Show joining the festivities and broadcasting live on campus. Students came dressed in the CBCA theme of ‘Reading is my Secret Power’ or as their favourite book character, and the costumes certainly did not disappoint. Students from each year level were awarded prizes for the following categories: Best Book Character, Most Creative Costume and Best homemade from recyclables.

The book week parade closed a week-long program of events focused on developing literacy skills and fostering a love of reading.

Earlier in the week, Ormiston College parents were invited to attend the workshop ‘Creating a Reading Path: Helping select books for and with your child’; The ‘Pizza and Paperback’ evening promoted the influence of male adult role models in shaping children’s engagement in reading. Students enjoyed an evening reading with their fathers, grandfathers, uncles, older brothers and the like, followed by a pizza meal.

A book swap program saw students at Ormiston College exchanging their preloved books whilst fundraising for Indigenous literacy programs. At the ‘Big Buddy, Book, Bear and Blanky’ afternoon younger junior school students brought in their favourite cuddly toy and book to read with their older buddies in the relaxed courtyard setting.
