Perfect Score in Computational and Algorithmic Thinking Competition

Senior School

The Computational and Algorithmic Thinking Competition is run by the Australian Mathematics Trust to promote logical and algorithmic thinking. This competition is a one-hour problem-solving competition which seeks to identify computer programming potential, although no prior programming experience is necessary.

Gatsby unleashed for Year 12 English

Senior School

This term, Year 12 students are studying texts such as Bram Stoker's Dracula, F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, J.R.R Tolkien's Fellowship of the Ring and Ian Fleming's Casino Royale with a view to why and how texts are adapted to film. The purpose of this unit is for students to consider how literary texts written in the past can connect with people who live in contemporary times. Currently students are working on their character monologue oral task. Within this context, we were very happy to host a performance of The Australian Playhouse's The Great Gatsby.

Year 8 students take on Kokoda Challenge

On Monday 24 April, Year 8 students walked in the footsteps of ANZAC heroes, as Brisbane’s infamous Mt Cootha lookout transformed into the rugged terrain of Papua New Guinea’s Kokoda trail. It was along the Kokoda track, 75 years ago, that our diggers overcame overwhelming odds and atrocious conditions to take victory over the enemy. Outnumbered and outgunned, this was possible due to their trust and respect for each other, their ability to never give up and their determination to hang in there when all seemed lost.

Our own world class sailor is the youngest in an all-female team

​Sailing in the Hobie 16 World Championships in the idyllic location of Dapeng in Southern China, our own world class sailor, Haylie Andrews (Year 12), with sailing friend Millie MacFarlane, finished fourth in the Women’s division of the 2016, 21st World Championships. A truly outstanding feat for the youngest all-female team in the Regatta which attracted the world’s top Hobie 16 sailors.

Students celebrate Queensland Debating Union achievements

Late in August the Queensland Debating Union (QDU) Secondary Schools Competition drew to a close for Year 8 to Year 12 teams. It was an exciting 2016 debating season with exceptional achievements all round. Three of our teams, Year 8, Year 9 and Year 11 progressed through to the final rounds, with our Year 10 being defeated in the last 16, just prior to the quarter finals.

​On 18 August, a small group of students from the Ormiston College Chamber Singers Choir attended the Vietnam Veterans Service at the Hemmant Cemetery. The official ceremony was compered by Allen Callaghan, the National Media Officer for the National Servicemen’s Association of Australia (NSAA), which included an address by the Lord Mayor of Brisbane, Graham Quirk.
