Student leaders for 2019 presented

On Friday 8 February, staff and all students from Year 1 to Year 12 made their way across campus to gather in the Somerset Sports Centre for the very first whole school assembly for 2019, celebrating the Prefects’ Investiture and Presentation of the Year 6 Student Leaders.

With approximately 1,300 students in attendance, the whole school assembly brought the College community together, allowing all to reflect on the values of Commitment, Unity and Pride that are central to the leadership role.

Also in attendance were Special Guests, Federal Member for Bowman, Andrew Laming MP, Division 8 Redland City Councillor, Tracey Huges, Ormiston College Deputy Chairman of the Board, Anthony Williams, 2018 College Captains Brittany Bell and Sam Meaney, and the parents of the student recipients.

After the National Anthem and the College Prayer, Headmaster, Brett Webster, addressed the assembly, outlining the leadership structures at the College and highlighting the many opportunities students have to engage their community. Mr Webster then invited the 13 Prefects to face the assembly and officially promoted them to the Office of Prefect. Mr Laming presented each of the recipients with their badges.

The assembly was also an occasion for the presentation of the Year 6 Student Leaders, who, like their Secondary School Prefect peers are charged with the leadership of Academic, Cultural, School Community, Social Justice and Sporting Committees. Badges were presented to the students by Mr Williams.

Following their official induction, College Captains Alexandra Neate and Max Payne took to the podium. Alexandra spoke of the role of community and encouraged students to make memories together and enjoy their time at the College. Max too reflected on the importance of community and working together, quoting John Lennon, “A dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together is reality.” Both Captains concluded their address wishing all students all the best for the year ahead.

The College hosted a morning tea for the newly inducted Prefects and Student Leaders, and their families immediately after the assembly.

Events that bring together the entire school are always regarded as special sharing occasions and the Prefects’ Investiture and Presentation of the Year 6 Student Leaders, is certainly one such event.
