Students acknowledged at the Australian Mathematics Trust Awards Presentation
The Australian Mathematics Trust 2016 Awards Presentation has held on the evening of Friday 4 November at King's Christian College on the Gold Coast.
Four students from Ormiston were invited to the presentation:
Koby Wood, Year 7, Computational and Algorithmic Thinking, High Distinction
Khaled Khan, Year 7, Australian Mathematics Competition, Prize
Ethan Strawbridge, Year 8, Australian Mathematics Competition, High Distinction
Sean Hall, Year 11, Australian Mathematics Competition, Prize and Best in School
The presentation evening was a wonderful way to celebrate the students' achievements. The guest speakers inspired the students to continue with their interests in mathematics and algorithmic thinking.
Professor Mike Clapper spoke about modern applications of mathematics, and the vital connections it has with coding. He also explained that there were still many fascinating problems to be solved in pure mathematics. The second speaker was Medallist, Guowen Zhang. Guowen described how his interest in mathematics arose through observing patterns. He also shared some of his problem-solving strategies.
