A reputation for high achievement in mathematics is very much part of the Ormiston College history. As a very young school we entered students in the mathematical section of the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) with extremely encouraging results. Over the years our students have competed in the Australian Mathematics Trust Competitions and Algorithmic Thinking Competition plus the Australian Mathematics Competition, all with great outcomes.
This month Ormiston College sent 11 teams to Moreton Bay College for the annual Maths Teams Challenge. As defending champions in each competition level and also defending Champion School, the pressure was on. Ormiston College came away with Third place in the Junior Division (Year 7/8), with only two points separating First and Third places. In the Intermediate Division (Year 9/10) our teams were successful in claiming First and Second places. In the Senior Division (Year 11/12) we again secured First and Second places in the competition. With these outstanding results, Ormiston College was once again named Champion School.
The aim of the Maths Teams Challenge is ‘to stimulate interest in mathematics and creative problem solving and to provide a day of intellectual fun in a scholarly atmosphere.’ The event certainly provided our learners with an exciting challenge, whilst creating an opportunity for Junior and Secondary students to represent their school. More importantly they are acquiring necessary skills for their future. A great tribute to the guidance of our great teachers and the performance of our learners.
